iPhone cult taking over everyone’s minds?

I was considering getting my son an iPhone for xmas but, the more I looked into it, the less likely that is. Everyone who has one raves endlessly with a crazy glint in their eye about apps, being able to check facebook on the bus, being directed around the streets by GPS (even on foot), video-ing something and posting immediately on fb.
However, I wonder if it’s a change for the good.
Is there ever a point in time when you’re not plugged into the global village?
Will you ever be able to find your own way somewhere, perhaps even (gasp) ask another human being for directions?
Can you live with facebook for 5 minutes?
Can you find the answer you’re looking for without Google?
Are you ever able to look around you and engage in your environment?
Will the phrase “stop and smell the roses” become quaint and obsolete?
Are you ever alone with your thoughts?
