san jose earthquake
A minor earthquake struck the southern San Francisco Bay Area yesterday. Thanks to the prepared work in recent years, the damage is small and there are no reports of injures untill now.
It is not the first time the residents in this area experience the earthquake. They will never forget the magnitude 6.9 earthquake on Oct. 17, 1989, which was centered near Loma Prieta peak in the mountains south of San Jose, killed 63 people and caused an estimated $6 billion to $10 billion in property loss. It is an important lesson for them.
A lot of measures have been taken to protect the citizens from the earthquake. The government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on this peojection, Renee Domingo, Oakland’s Emergency Services and Homeland Security Director said. With these money, the technology about the earthquake advanced quickly and better prepared this region for another earthquake. The government also know the importance of the transportation systerm in the war against the earthquake, so they invested a little more than $1 billion to retrofit 1,039 bridges and employed workers to inspect these bridges one time at least every two years.
It is clear that these measures works. But many experts warn that to prepare for the earthquake ,we still have a long way to go and we can’t allow complacency to set in. “We can’t rest on those efforts and we must keep preparing.” Jack Boatwright, a U.S. Geological Survey seismologist and a coordinator for earthquake hazards investigations, said. It is said that four contracts for the seismic upgrade have been completed, work on eight other contracts is currently underway and work on 15 more contracts will begin in the next few years.
Do you think we have prepared well for a large earthquake in the future?
