To explore some options and upgrade strategies for the two main classes of mobile devices, computers phones and handhelds, this one, including mobile phones. As we noted in the section above, the decision on if / when / how upgrade must be rooted in a cost-benefit analysis. Given the limited life of mobile devices – such limitations imposed by technological change and obsolescence, applications and changing requirements for other uses, and loss or damage – any decision to upgrade should be done with care and return on investment (ROI) in mind.

But many parts are fragile, and a stray static shock can fry the machine.
The same thing can be said for the development of an internal wireless LAN or WAN. Connectors involved, especially for the antennas, can be very fragile indeed. And a new hard drive, while adding both capacity and, in general, performance can be a great job – the backup of the old drive, swapping the drives (which is mechanically very simple), then reload the backup copy. Sometimes things go very, very wrong here – that means that the operating system must be reinstalled from scratch. It is not difficult, but it can take a very long time. And all this can be avoided in any case – the easy way to add more storage is via USB, which are now amazingly cheap.
The beauty of option A is that any new hardware can be reused on the next cell, and – other than the need possible to install new drivers – it is usually very low risk. Of course, software updates, such as moving Windows XP to Vista may require more memory and disk space, perhaps motivate an upgrade. But caution is advised here again – do you think really need a new operating system? Updates like these are generally not recommended, and it is often preferable to introduce new operating system on new PCs as the natural replacement cycle continues.
This situation is particularly true in the case of Vista, which suffers from application compatibility – despite the zippy new Aero user, who does, moreover, need a huge two gigabytes of memory to run well and adds very little in the way of useful new features. A final note – I generally recommend cons updates the BIOS on PCs unless there is a known problem that needs fixing. Flash a new BIOS is somewhat risky, and there are usually little, if any, benefits or features performances here if everything is otherwise working well.
Regarding handhelds – eh Well, there are rarely opportunities for hardware upgrades, perhaps fortunately. But frustrating, software updates are also generally very limited. For example, my Motorola Q running Windows Mobile 5, can not be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. It may be a cynical attempt to make me buy a new phone, which I do fairly often anyway. Yet, other software updates can make so much sense in extending the functionality and therefore the return on investment of pocket. For example, if I fail to Windows Mobile 6, Can I install a new browser that will produce a more satisfying and productive web experience. It is also possible to add new applications for mobile OS, and many they are free or inexpensive.
Finally, make sure cell phone is updated with your carrier. Conveyers in general make this easy. Verizon states that performance is enhanced if done regularly.
